A Lowestoft primary school has come up with an innovative method of communicating key learning behaviours to its pupils.

Red Oak Primary School have introduced five ‘learning behaviour superheroes’, created by the children, to provide a more visual approach, especially beneficial for younger children.

The five characters – Engagement Emeka, Independent Ivan, Resilient Rose, Perseverance Primrose and Enthusiastic Eddie - have been created to correspond with the school’s five learning behaviours, demonstrated in the heroes’ respective titles.

The scheme is part of a wider project within Red Oak surrounding learning behaviours. From September, the school is introducing booklets for every child to carry with them throughout their school life, in which demonstrations of the behaviours listed previously will be recorded.

Examples of such behaviours could be things as simple as younger children bringing in and hanging up their own coat, bookpack and any other items without assistance – relating to, in this case, ‘Independent Ivan’.

Consistent demonstrations of the encouraged behaviours will result in up to five pins being awarded, before students will then go on to earn their bronze, silver and gold awards.

“Emphasis on the five behaviours has really helped the children with their learning,” said headteacher of Red Oak, Heather Madsen.

“We are really looking forward to the impact that our new superheroes are going to have, particularly on the younger children.”
