Chantry Academy hosts Community Iftar
Around 100 people from Chantry Academy’s school community attended a memorable Iftar event held at the secondary school in Ipswich last week.
Iftar is the name for the evening meal Muslims eat at sunset to break their fast during the month of Ramadan.
The school served a vegetable curry with pilau rice and naan breads as well as a selection of fresh fruit and dates, free of charge to all. Families brought foods from their cultures to share and families of all faiths also attended and shared food.
One teacher made and prepared all the deserts for the evening, which were traditional Halwa puddings. Food which was left over was donated to the local homeless centre.
The BSC multi cultural services attended and praised the event for being wonderful and inclusive. A large prayer room was available and the community from four mosques were also invited to join.
This is the second year that the secondary school has brought the community together to reflect and celebrate gratitude and unity.
“This is the second year of holding an Iftar at Chantry, and it is continuing to grow.
This event is a wonderful way of bringing members of our school community and the wider community together. Chantry plays a vital role in not only providing education for our young people but also developing understanding and knowledge of the experiences of people within our wider community as well.
During both events we have seen students and families with different backgrounds, beliefs and cultures come together and share food, stories and laughter.”
