ALT welcomes mature career changers to teaching

Active Learning Trust (ALT) has had the pleasure of celebrating a high number of trainee teachers this year, bucking the national trend and becoming the largest partner for Ambition Institute Teacher Training outside of London, with 164 applications received through the Department for Education.

The trust – which supports 21 schools across Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Norfolk – is delighted to have welcomed mature career changers, and is looking to welcome more applicants in the new year.

78% of last year’s cohort were career changers - an unusually high proportion for trainee teacher courses - and this year’s figures are very similar so far, at 77%.

New recruits include former architects, police officers and marketing and finance professionals, as well as a physicist, and a London Underground driver who already had three degrees.

ALT offers training with two partners – the University of Bedford and Ambition Institute – delivering both PGCE and QTS (qualified teacher status) routes.

“At Active Learning Trust, we have really invested in our Initial Teacher Training programme, ensuring that trainees are properly supported from the moment they apply.

We are greatly encouraged by the quality and diversity of candidates and we are keen to support other professionals who might be considering a career change as they focus on their goals for the new year.

Children only get one chance at their education and by investing in teacher training, we are strengthening our workforce, supporting our schools, and improving outcomes for the communities we serve.”
